A Faerie Tale in Shards (Part One)

by Patrick Tirol

Hello Guys! I’m Patrick Tirol and I’ve been an avid pilot of the UB “So Called Top of the Food Chain Deck” Faeries Deck. Since the rotation has stripped me of some of the vital power cards (Ancestral Visions, Damnation, Rune Snag, River of Tears, etc.), I had to think of an innovation that would suit my predicted metagame.

Without my perfect one drop Ancestral Visions curve, I had to put more cantrip spells just to compensate the card advantage benefits. It may not be as equally powerful as Ancestral Visions, but at least its better than nothing.

The main components of the Faes are still intact. I just had to adopt against its evolving nemesis opponents such as Kithkins, RDW, Merfolk, Elves, etc. I made up my own innovation, patterned to the archetype from Yuuta Takahashi’s Japan Nationals Deck. Also, observing Raphael Levy’s playing strategies, on how he handled adversity against the Demigods and other fat critters last GP Manila, helped me create a twist. With those tools I was able to formulate my own modified version of their techs.

Here’s the deck:

Match Results

Here’s a summary of my matchups:

Round 1 vs JP – UW Merefolks - 1-0-1 = 1 Point
Round 2 vs Raymund – BW Oreo - 2-0-0 = 4 Points
Round 3 vs Ralph – WW Kithkin – 2-1-0 = 7 Points
Round 4 vs Tonton – WW Kithkin – Draw = 8 Points
Top 4 vs Tonx2 – WW Kithkin – 2-1-0 = Finals
Finals vs Mao – WW Kithkin – Bye = 1st Place

Now I really can’t recall exactly what happened but all I can say is Kithkins would usually run me over in game number 1, so I had to depend on my Games 2-3. I tell you depending on Game 2 and 3 is not a very good idea, but it worked for me during that day. Merfolks have their own resiliency but I think this tech during sideboarding can handle the Merrow Boys at a consistent basis, the solution is loads of creature kills. Oreo decks can be handled too as we sort to have an edge over them.

I was kinda disappointed though because I wanted to try the tech on RDW and Q n T or any similar 5 Color Control for that matter. I wanted to see if it can beat burn as what my prediction states. During playtesting, I was able to beat a few RDW with the use of a few twists, but still Red Decks can still be very overwhelming. By making these adjustments, I have lessened my control over the late game control decks. That is also the reason why I wanted to test the waters with “Question N Tanong”. We’ll see…

Till next time.
